The present work was cast in 1952. It is a reduced model of the central figure in the monument to Soviet Army men who perished in the battles against Fascism in the Treptower Park memorial complex, Berlin. This monument was completed in 1949 and the stones and granite used came from the demolished New Reich Chancellery. The depiction of the Russian soldier holding a child and standing astride a broken swastika commemorates the heroism of Sergeant Nikolai Masalov who r escued a German girl who had been separated from her mother.
