​The present painting of Peasants was painted at this exact time of exposure to the painting traditions of western Europe. The abbreviated forms and broad brushstrokes echo the avant-garde styles whilst still retaining a very Russian approach to both subject matter and emotion.

Gavriil Gorelov
1880 - 1966

​Gorelov studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg and was a pupil of Ilya Repin. He was awarded a scholarship which allowed him to study in Germany, Italy and France from 1911-1912.
